# Tool interruptions

> Review the authored interruption window for a tool and distinguish it from cancellation, execution timing, and first-message behavior.

An interruption policy describes when a caller should be able to interrupt around a tool call. Choose the narrowest restriction needed for the task and prepare a clear response when the user changes their request.

<Note>
  The dashboard and API can store interruption settings. They do not prove working audio interruption handling or cancellation of an external action. Live tool and conversation execution require separate verification.
</Note>

## Choose the requested window

The tool's `interruption_mode` has three values:

| Value | Intended interruption policy |
| - | - |
| `allow` | Allow interruptions; this is the default. |
| `disable_during_tool` | Suppress interruptions while the tool runs. |
| `disable_during_tool_and_turn` | Extend suppression through the agent response following the tool. |

The setting does not define a cancellation endpoint. Even when a caller changes their mind, a remote write may already have completed. The service handling that action needs its own way to inspect or cancel work where appropriate.

## Save and review a preference

<Steps>
  <Step title="Locate the correct resource">
    For a system tool, open the agent's **Tools > System tools** panel, enable the intended tool, and open its settings. For a shared client or webhook tool, use the workspace tool editor.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the interruption choice">
    In the system-tool editor, expand **Advanced > Interruptions**. **Allow**, **Disable during tool**, and **Disable through turn** correspond to the values above.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save at the right level">
    A system-tool sheet's **Save** changes the agent working copy. Preserve the reviewed definition in a complete [server draft](/agents-platform/deploy/versioning) for API read-back. A shared tool's **Save** changes that shared resource instead.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Prepare an interruption review">
    Record what should happen if the caller interrupts before dispatch, during a slow response, or after completion. Keep expected conversation behavior separate from the external action's final state.
  </Step>
</Steps>

`execution_mode` controls a different requested behavior: when the tool runs. `conversation_config.agent.disable_first_message_interruptions` is also separate and applies to the first message. Do not use either as a substitute for the tool's interruption policy.

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Does allow cancel a running tool when I speak?" id="faq-tool-interruptions-cancel">
    No cancellation guarantee is established by this flag. Interrupting conversation output and cancelling work in another service are different operations.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I infer the policy from a timeout?" id="faq-tool-interruptions-timeout">
    No. Response timeout, interruption mode, and execution timing are separate settings. Review all three for the intended tool type.
