# Configure an agent

> Configure behavior, speech, knowledge, tools, personalization, authentication, and integrations, then review the saved agent version.

Start with the task the agent should handle. Work through the settings that support that task, then review the complete version rather than publishing isolated field changes without their context.

## Choose a guide

| Task | Guide | Review outcome |
| - | - | - |
| Understand the configuration | [Agent behavior](/agents-platform/configure/agent-behavior/overview) | Identify instructions, models, platform settings, and workflow. |
| Write clear instructions | [Prompting](/agents-platform/configure/agent-behavior/prompting) | Match the prompt, first message, and task boundaries. |
| Adjust conversation behavior | [Conversation flow](/agents-platform/configure/agent-behavior/conversation-flow) | Review interruption and timeout settings. |
| Prepare per-conversation values | [Personalization](/agents-platform/configure/personalization/dynamic-variables) | Separate variable placeholders, defaults, and private values. |
| Configure speech and language | [Voice and language](/agents-platform/configure/voice-and-language/overview) | Choose compatible recognition, generation, and language policy. |
| Attach source material | [Knowledge base](/agents-platform/configure/knowledge-base/overview) | Read stored content and inspect dependencies. |
| Attach actions | [Tools](/agents-platform/configure/tools/overview) | Review definitions, resource access, and identifiers. |
| Prepare credentials | [Authentication](/agents-platform/configure/authentication/overview) | Separate platform access, provider credentials, and session access. |
| Connect an external service | [Integrations](/agents-platform/configure/integrations/overview) | Choose native connections, custom MCP, or separately configured webhook tools. |

## Review a saved configuration

Use the [API quickstart](/agents-platform/get-started/api-quickstart) for a complete creation example. Use [versions and drafts](/agents-platform/deploy/versioning) to select a branch, inspect the diff, and read the published configuration back.

Dashboard controls marked as previews do not establish saved configuration. Use the supported persisted controls or the corresponding API fields, and confirm the saved values after a change.
